Geotechnical Engineer (Dams)

Job Description

Job Title: Senior or Principal Geotechnical Engineer. Location: Toronto, Guelph, Cambridge, or Waterloo, Canada. We are seeking a Senior or Principal Geotechnical Engineer to support the growth of our geotechnical and dam engineering practices. This role involves leading and managing a variety of technical projects, contributing to business development, and mentoring junior staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, manage, and perform geotechnical, geoenvironmental, civil, mining, and geological field investigations, including drilling, instrumentation, and construction quality assurance.
  • Lead dam safety reviews for mining and water dams.
  • Utilize numerical modeling software for stability, seepage, and settlement/deformation analysis.
  • Prepare and coordinate design calculations, drawings, technical specifications, construction cost estimates, reports, and permit applications.
  • Manage projects to ensure technical excellence, budget control, schedule compliance, quality, client satisfaction, and profitability.
  • Review and manage the production of written documents.
  • Engage in business development activities, including acquiring new clients and obtaining repeat business, leading proposal preparation, and developing business development plans.
  • Mentor staff and support their professional growth.
  • Specific health and safety training (e.g., OSHA/MSHA, first aid, CPR) will be provided.
  • Ongoing professional development through technical conferences, seminars, webinars, and mentoring.

Qualifications:

Education & Licensure:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical, Geological, or Civil Engineering (required).
  • Advanced degree in the same fields (preferred).
  • Professional registration in Ontario (P.Eng.) (required).

Skills, Experience, and Qualifications:

  • At least 8 years of relevant geotechnical consulting experience, with a focus on tailings facilities or dam engineering, and at least 5 years in the consulting marketplace (required).
  • Detailed understanding of National and Ontario Building Codes, Regulations, and Guidelines, including Canadian Dam Association (CDA), Mining Association of Canada (MAC), and global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) (preferred).
  • Familiarity with seismic design, liquefaction analysis, and Risk Informed Decision Making (RIDM) (preferred).
  • Experience with multi-disciplinary project teams (required).
  • Proficiency with numerical modeling and design software packages (preferred).
  • Experience as Engineer of Record (or Deputy Engineer of Record) for mining or water dams (preferred but not essential).
  • Proven success in client development and management (required).
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment (required).
  • Valid Canadian driver’s license and satisfactory driving record (required).
