Job Description

We are recruiting an experienced Technical Director Environment to join our Environment & Sustainability business, which has over 650 staff across the UK & Ireland. As we are a national team, we are flexible in terms of location – this includes our offices in Basingstoke, Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Chesterfield, Croydon, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Leeds, London Aldgate, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Plymouth, St Albans, & Warrington. Responsibilities:

As a Technical Director, you’ll lead multidisciplinary environmental inputs to large-scale development projects that are transforming our infrastructure & helping the UK achieve its net zero goals. This includes:

Energy Projects: Carbon capture & storage, hydrogen, & renewables (solar & wind).

Energy Distribution & Transmission Projects: Including international connectors.

Strategic National & Regional Rail Projects.

Highway Improvements & Greenway Projects.

Regeneration Projects: Including portside developments.

Developments: Within the ecommerce, minerals & waste, water, defense, aviation, commercial/residential, & industrial sectors.

You’ll lead environmental inputs across all project life stages, from early strategy development & site identification studies, through feasibility, optioneering/option selection, outline design, to detailed design, discharging of conditions, construction, & scheme operation/maintenance. You will work across a portfolio of development projects covering multiple consenting regimes (DCO, TCPA, TWA, hybrid Bill, etc.). You will also play a key role in securing new commissions & managing client relationships.

Your Role Will Include:

Expertise: Lead & direct multidisciplinary environmental inputs across various projects, helping clients gain development consent. This includes technical review & verification of environmental report inputs, as well as directing staff resources & budgets.

Collaborate: Work as part of integrated design teams to identify environmental constraints, avoid impacts, & develop solutions in accordance with the mitigation hierarchy, delivering benefits where possible.

Create: Lead & support business opportunities & associated fee & technical proposal development. Engage with clients & manage ongoing client relationships.

Inspire: Play an active role in staff development & mentoring.

Champion: Promote AECOM’s environmental services to both internal & external audiences.

Qualifications:

To apply for this role, you need to demonstrate experience in directing & managing multidisciplinary environmental inputs to infrastructure development projects. You should have:

Experience of leading consultancy services.

An excellent understanding of the EIA processes & environmental assessment methods.

A detailed understanding of relevant consenting & licensing regimes.

Confidence in engaging with a variety of stakeholder groups & clients.

Ability to work collaboratively as part of an established team, leading inputs from specialist technical teams.

Excellent verbal & report writing skills, including technical reviewing.

Project director skills, including programming, staff resource, & budget management.

A degree in a relevant environmental discipline (preferably a Master’s degree) & an appropriate professional membership.

Willingness to travel.

Preferred Qualifications: Chartered Environmentalist status. Interest in line management duties & staff mentoring. Experience of the DCO and/or TWAO consenting regimes.
